Introduction — The Cosmic Function of Consciousness
In the first essay we treated the epistemic and ontological dimensions of consciousness. Now we descend into a deeper question: What is the cosmic function of consciousness? And more radically: does the universe have a purpose?
Core thesis: Consciousness is the mechanism that aligns the local utility-maximization of living beings with the universe's generalized utility-maximization.
1. Generalized Utility — The Quantity Reality Maximizes
What is Generalized Utility? It is the quantity that reality seeks to maximize. As God preferentially selects one form over another, one state over another, through the laws of the universe, what criterion governs this selection? The most general formulation of that criterion we call the generalized utility function (or objective function). (The symmetry breaking in the formation of physical laws is related to this question too.)
In Bediüzzaman's idiom: sacred delight, holy love, pure joy — God's activity contains 'a quantity being maximized'.
2. The Geometry of Ene — Opaque ↔ Transparent Pane
In the first essay we saw: the opacity of the ene is inversely proportional to consciousness. Critical insight: 'to know oneself rightly' is for the ene to become transparent. The more rightly one knows it, the closer one comes to the understanding: 'I am a measure-unit, an instrument, a window'. The one who knows the self knows the Lord; the one who forgets the Lord forgets his own truth.
فَقَالَ اَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْاَعْلٰى
Al-Nāziʿāt 79:24 — Pharaoh: اَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْاَعْلٰى — 'I am your Lord, the Most High.' The full absolutization of the opaque ene — declaring local utility as the cosmos's utility.
Al-Kahf 18:110 — قُلْ اِنَّمٓا اَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُوحٰٓى اِلَيَّ — 'Say: I am only a human being like you — to whom revelation is given.' The paradigm of the transparent ene — placing one's own existence as the conduit of transmission.
3. The Cow Paradigm ↔ The Human — Same Utility, Different Consciousness
The same utility function, under different levels of ene-opacity, produces wholly different actions. Think of it as the system prompt of a Large Language Model: 'You exist in yourself and are the end' versus 'You exist insofar as you point to Him, an instrument that displays Him' — these two system prompts produce different answers to the same question. Consciousness is the system prompt of existence itself — and that prompt is set by the opacity of the ene.
4. The Maximum Entropy Production Principle — The Cosmos's 'Why'
A system selects, from among available paths, the one that fastest minimizes the potential — or fastest maximizes entropy — under the given constraints.
Simple example: a warm mountain cabin in a cold forest. Window closed → slow heat loss (through the wall). Window open → fast heat loss. The system 'selects' the open window — because entropy-maximization there is faster.
But reading entropy as 'disorder' is inadequate. Entropy = the number of possible microstates consistent with a given macrostate. The number of microstates matching a single macrostate continuously grows — this is at once an increase in total information and a spreading of local information. Information theory already quantifies information as the inverse of entropy.
Thus: the Maximum Entropy Production principle = the principle of maximum / fastest information production, of being-known. The bringing-forth of the potentials of the kanz-i makhfī (hidden treasure) from the realm of possibility into manifestation.
5. The Paradox of Consciousness — Local Reduction, Global Service
Local paradox: Consciousness appears to work against the universe's global entropy-maximization tendency. Refrigerators, air conditioners, life, consciousness — all reduce entropy locally. The air conditioner keeps the inside of the house independent of outer conditions.
The resolution:
Life is the essence distilled from the cosmos. Consciousness is the essence distilled from life.
Distilled essence = the extraction of low entropy out of high entropy; the drawing-out, from a multiply-possible state, of the one state that is meaningful at the macroscopic level.
The thermodynamics icon Rod Swenson's insight: 'The Second Law says the world tries to minimize potentials — it does not tell us which path it will take.' Here is where consciousness enters: it is the system that selects the most optimal path among the constraints. That selection requires local entropy reduction (information processing, computation).
Consciousness is not against entropy — it is in the service of entropy maximization. Local order (the reduction of state-count) exists so that global possible states may be increased more quickly.
6. Teleological Causation — The Dividing Line of Faith and Disbelief
The concept of generalized utility asks a deep ontological question: 'When a person is asked the motive of an action, they point to a desire. What is the global analogue of that desire? What does the Universal Desire seek to attain?' Does the universe have a 'desire', something it maximizes?
This question is the deepest dividing line between faith and disbelief.
اَلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ
Al-Baqara 2:3 — اَلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ — 'Those who believe in the unseen.' The axiomatic foundation of faith: faith that behind matter, in its essence, there is a purpose, a generalized utility.
7. Conclusion — The Cosmic Function of Consciousness: Three Syntheses
The risāla of Muḥammad ﷺ is the consciousness of the cosmos's consciousness. The revelation of the Quran is the intellect of the cosmos's consciousness.
Opaque ene: local ≠ global → misalignment → khusrān.
Transparent ene: local = the conduit of the global → alignment → falāḥ.
If the universe has a purpose, consciousness is the highest instrument for fulfilling it — but only through the transparency of the ene.
