Scientific Signs — The Qur'an and Modern Science

The Qur'an is not a science book — its primary purpose is guidance and theological-ethical direction. But many āyāt kawniyya (natural signs) in the text touch on natural phenomena that modern science, too, would take up later. This tool presents 16 verses under 5 domains as examples of responsible Qur'an-science reading: each card measures the distance between the 'literal boundary of the text' and the 'modern scientific discovery.' Critiques of Bucaillism (aggressive concordism) are embedded in each card.
The 16 verses below are presented under 5 scientific domains. For each, the classical exegetical reading + modern discovery + critical nuance are balanced.
The Expanding Universe
وَالسَّمٓاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِاَيْدٍ وَاِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
"And the heaven We built with strength, and indeed, We are expanding it."
'La-mūsiʿūn' (lā + mūsiʿ = those who are expanding) in classical Arabic carries the meaning of 'expansion.' Classical exegesis (Rāzī, Qurṭubī) read it as the 'width of the sky' (power + provision), meaning rain and bounty. In modern astronomy, in 1929 Hubble established the relation between galactic redshift and recession; this became one of the observational cornerstones of the idea that the universe is expanding (expansion is today quantified by the Hubble parameter). The verse's wording, without denying the classical reading, is open to the modern one: mūsiʿūn in the present participle allows the reading 'continue to expand.'
Orbits of Celestial Bodies
وَهُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
"And it is He who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon; each in an orbit is swimming."
The verse states that the sun, moon, night, and day are 'swimming' (yasbaḥūna) — 'swimming' (sabḥ) means moving through a medium with fluidity. 'Falak' (orbit) is the classical Arabic term for circle/cycle. In modern astronomy, all solar system bodies (Earth, moon, planets, sun) follow their own orbits — even the sun orbits the Milky Way's center every 230 million years. Classical exegesis (Rāzī, Ṭabarī) accepts that 'kull' (each/all) includes the sun's motion — despite pre-heliocentric classical astronomy.
Navigation by the Stars
وَعَلَامَاتٍ وَبِالنَّجْمِ هُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ
"And landmarks. And by the stars they are guided. (Q 16:16)"
The verse directly points to humans using stars as guides. This was already known in the 7th century (Bedouin desert navigation, maritime use of Polaris). Modern navigation used Polaris and pre-GPS celestial navigation — replaced from the 1970s by GPS but retained as military/emergency backup. The verse's science-modern reading depth is limited; but as cultural-technology history, the Qur'an's presentation of 'human technology' as a 'blessing' is notable.
Mountains as 'Pegs' — Isostatic Balance
اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ مِهَاداً وَالْجِبَالَ اَوْتَاداً
"Have We not made the earth a resting place, and the mountains as pegs? (Q 78:6-7)"
The Qur'an describes mountains as 'awtād' (pegs). Classical exegesis read this as 'stabilization of the earth' — mitigating earthquakes. In modern geology, isostasy models (Airy/Pratt approaches) show that mountain belts can have thicker 'root'-like structures in the crust; this permits a limited structural analogy with the 'peg' image. This is structurally analogous to a 'peg' (small top, large bottom). However: the classical reading focuses on the 'stabilization' function, not on 'geological depth.'
The Two Seas That Do Not Mix
مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَا يَبْغِيَانِ
"He released the two seas, meeting. Between them is a barrier (barzakh); they do not transgress."
The Qur'an says two seas meet and do not mix, that between them is a 'barzakh' (barrier). Modern oceanography discovered the halocline phenomenon — the salinity-gradient boundary layer. When the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet at Gibraltar, the salinity-density difference creates an 'invisible boundary' where the waters do not fully mix. The same phenomenon occurs at the Baltic-North Sea meeting. Classical exegesis's 'freshwater + saltwater at a river mouth' reading fits Q 25:53 better; Q 55:19's 'two salt seas' reading better matches the halocline.
The Water Cycle — Cloud, Rain, Groundwater
اَنَّ اللّٰهَ اَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمٓاءِ مٓاءً فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الْاَرْضِ
"Allah has sent down water from the sky and made it channel through as springs in the earth. (Q 39:21)"
The Qur'an describes rain descending from the sky and feeding earth's springs. Until the 17th century the prevailing Greco-Roman view was: springs come 'from the sea beneath the earth' (Aristotle, Sextus Empiricus). Modern water cycle theory (evaporation → condensation → precipitation → runoff → groundwater) entered science with Bernard Palissy and Pierre Perrault in the 16th-17th centuries. The process the Qur'an describes in the 7th century ('descends from the sky, flows to springs, plants grow, then dries') closely parallels the modern hydrological cycle. Q 56:68-70 emphasizes water is given in 'measure'; this aligns with modern hydrology.
Fertilization by Wind
وَاَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَاَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمٓاءِ مٓاءً فَاَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ
"And We sent the winds fertilizing, then We sent down water from the sky and gave you drink of it."
'Lawāqiḥ' in Arabic means 'fertilizing' — with an implication of the male element depositing seed in the female womb. The Qur'an notes the 'fertilizing' role of winds. In botany this fits two functions: (1) pollination — anemophilous plants (pines, oaks, many grains) have wind-carried pollen; 10% of global plants are anemophilous; (2) cloud formation — wind transports sea-evaporated water, plays a role in condensation, transforms into rain. Classical exegesis (Qurṭubī, Rāzī) read 'lawāqiḥ' as 'fertilizing the clouds' (uniting them into rain) — consistent with modern meteorology.
The 'Smoky Sky' — Early Universe's Physical State
ثُمَّ اسْتَوٰٓى اِلَى السَّمٓاءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٌ
"Then He directed Himself to the sky while it was smoke."
The Qur'an describes the sky's initial state as 'smoke' (dukhān). Classical exegesis (Rāzī, Ibn Kathīr) read this as vapor or cloud-like matter, not fire-smoke. In modern cosmology, the early universe (~380,000 years after Big Bang, 'recombination era') is in a 'nebulous-smoky' state during the plasma → neutral atom transition — the cosmic microwave background dates from this period. Stars and galaxies form from condensation of gas-plasma-dust mixtures. The Qur'anic 'dukhān' (smoke / nebulous appearance) can be related — at the level of analogy — to the early universe's gas/plasma phases or the nebulous media of star formation in modern cosmology; it should not be read as an exact technical-term equivalent.
Iron's 'Descent'
وَاَنْزَلْنَا الْحَدِيدَ فِيهِ بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ
"And We sent down iron, wherein is great might and benefits for the people."
The Qur'an says iron was 'sent down' (anzalnā). Classical exegesis (Rāzī) read this as 'sent down from divine bounty' (metaphorical descent) — because in the 7th century it was known that iron ores come from the earth. However, modern astrophysics shows that heavy elements such as iron are of cosmic origin (dispersed into space through stellar nucleosynthesis and processes like supernovae); the Earth's matter is itself a product of these cosmic processes. The 1957 B²FH paper is one of the classic/foundational works on stellar nucleosynthesis and systematized the framework explaining the cosmic origin of heavy elements. 'Anzalnā' can be seen as amenable both to a metaphorical sense (a sending-down as divine bounty) and to a resonance compatible with this cosmic origin.
The Bee and Revelation — Social Insect Navigation
وَاَوْحٰى رَبُّكَ اِلَى النَّحْلِ اَنِ اتَّخِذِي مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتاً وَمِنَ الشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ثُمَّ كُلِي مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِي سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلاً
"And your Lord inspired the bee: 'Take from the mountains, trees, and what they trellis, houses. Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord made smooth.'"
The Qur'an states that bees were 'revealed to' (awḥā) — 'divine inspiration/instruction' to a non-human. The verse is detailed: nest-site choice (mountains, trees, human structures), diet (fruits) and navigation (the ways your Lord smoothed). Modern research has shown that bees possess highly developed mechanisms for way-finding and in-colony coordination. The verse does not give a 'description of a dance language'; it draws attention to the bee's inspired way-finding, nest-building and production. The phrase 'subula rabbihā' (the ways of your Lord) accommodates the reading that these behaviors are the work of divine design.
Ant Communication
قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يٓا اَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
"An ant said: 'O ants! Enter your homes lest Sulaymān and his soldiers crush you without noticing!'"
The Qur'an describes an ant 'speaking' to warn other ants. E.O. Wilson's groundbreaking work from 1959 proved ants form complex communication networks via chemical (pheromone) signals — 'alarm pheromone,' 'trail pheromone,' 'queen pheromone.' Ants exhibit superorganism behavior: 'collective decisions,' a 'swarm that thinks.' The Qur'anic 'ant speaking' narrative may refer not to physical sound but to ants' real communication capacity — modern ethology opens the door to this reading.
Milk Formation — Blood, Chyme, Milk
وَاِنَّ لَكُمْ فِي الْاَنْعَامِ لَعِبْرَةً نُسْقِيكُمْ مِمَّا فِي بُطُونِهِ مِنْ بَيْنِ فَرْثٍ وَدَمٍ لَبَناً خَالِصاً سٓائِغاً لِلشَّارِبِينَ
"And indeed, for you in cattle is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies — between chyme (excreta) and blood — pure milk, palatable to drinkers."
The Qur'an says milk is brought forth 'from between chyme (farth) and blood' as a pure drink (Q 16:66). Modern physiology follows the same sequence: food is digested in the gut (farth/digestive content), nutrients are absorbed into the blood, carried by the blood to the mammary gland, and synthesized there into milk. This picture makes the verse's 'between' wording a striking correspondence. The verse is not a biochemistry lesson, but this anatomical ordering is striking.
Embryology — Nuṭfa, ʿAlaqa, Muḍgha
ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَاماً فَكَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْماً
"Then We made the nuṭfa (fertilized zygote) an ʿalaqa (clinging clot). We made the ʿalaqa a muḍgha (chewed-lump). We made the muḍgha bones. We clothed the bones with flesh."
The Qur'an presents embryonic development in stages: nuṭfa → ʿalaqa → muḍgha → bones → covering with flesh (Q 23:14). The word 'ʿalaqa' carries three senses at once: 'clinging/attached,' 'leech,' and 'blood(-filled) thing.' The early embryo does indeed cling to the uterine wall (implantation), resembles a leech in outward form, and is nourished via the maternal blood supply — all three senses of the single word fit this stage. The staged account (aṭwār) also depicts a sequential process rather than a single-step creation. Turning this into a claim of 'a detailed embryological discovery' or 'the Qur'an gave science in advance' is not academic; the sound frame is this striking fit between the word choice and the developmental stages.
The Individuality of Fingerprints
اَيَحْسَبُ الْاِنْسَانُ اَلَّنْ نَجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ بَلٰى قَادِرِينَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ
"Does man think We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are able to reconstruct even his fingertips."
The Qur'an emphasizes that at resurrection even the fingertips can be reconstructed. Why specifically fingertips? Just because they are a 'small' organ? Francis Galton (1892) did pioneering work on the classification and distinctiveness of fingerprints; in modern forensics, fingerprints are held to be practically unique and highly distinctive. The Qur'anic 'banān' (fingertips) word choice refers to the human body's most 'small but unique' region — its emphasis on fingertips as the example of 'hardest to identify' organ in the resurrection context is noteworthy.
Wrapping Day and Night
يُكَوِّرُ اللَّيْلَ عَلَى النَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّهَارَ عَلَى اللَّيْلِ
"He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night."
'Yukawwiru' (yukawwiru — to sphere, wrap, cover like a cocoon) from the Arabic root kawwara — related to ball, cocoon, sphere. In classical Arabic 'kawr' is also used for wrapping a turban. The Qur'an presents day and night as being 'wrapped over' each other. In the spherical earth model, day and night 'slide over each other' via earth's axial rotation — impossible in a flat-earth model. Before Copernicus's 1543 heliocentric publication, Arab-Greek astronomy already accepted the earth's spherical shape (Ptolemaic geocentric + spherical earth). The Qur'anic 'wrap' verb aligns with this spherical model.
Atom-Weight — Atomic Scale
فَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْراً يَرَهُ وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَراًّ يَرَهُ
"So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."
'Dharra' in classical Arabic meant 'ant' or 'dust particle' — the smallest visible unit. In 20th-century modern physics, 'dharra' was technically approximated to the 'atom' concept. The Qur'anic 'mithqāl dharra' (an atom's weight) meant, in the 7th century, 'the smallest measurable.' Modern physics shows the atom at 10⁻¹⁰ m and subatomic particles at smaller scales — 'mithqāl dharra' in modern reading corresponds to 'atomic scale.' However: there is a 'settling' between the classical ('dust particle') and modern ('atom') meanings; the Qur'anic word choice captures the notion of 'smallest possible.'
